About this screener — evidence, source
Twenty yes/no questions about depressive, anxiety and somatic symptoms in the last 30 days, developed by WHO to screen for common ("neurotic") mental disorders in primary health care, especially in developing countries. It can be self-administered or read aloud. WHO recommends no single global cut-off; each setting should establish its own.
Evidence · validated
Developed in the WHO Collaborative Study on Strategies for Extending Mental Health Care (Colombia, India, Senegal, Sudan and others). Across the studies reviewed in the WHO user's guide, sensitivity ranged from 62.9% to 90% and specificity from 44% to 95.2%, depending on cut-off, language and setting (e.g. 7/8 cut-off: 83% / 80% in Brazil, Mari & Williams 1985).
