About this screener — evidence, source, alternatives
A brief screen for insomnia disorder built on DSM-5 criteria. It covers sleep onset and maintenance, frequency and quality of poor sleep, daytime impact, overall concern, and duration over the past month. Higher scores mean better sleep, and item scores of 0–2 mark responses at the threshold criteria for insomnia disorder.
Evidence · validated
Developed in the Great British Sleep Survey (12,628 adults) and replicated in further samples: Cronbach’s alpha 0.86; correlations with the PSQI (r = −0.73) and ISI (r = −0.79); sensitive to change after CBT for insomnia. An SCI ≤ 16 correctly identified 89% of people with probable insomnia disorder (ISI ≥ 15), and > 16 correctly identified 82% of those without (Espie et al., 2014). Not yet tested against a clinical diagnostic interview in that paper.
