About this screener — evidence, source

Questions 6–8 of the full Patient Health Questionnaire: loss of control over eating, eating unusually large amounts within two hours, frequency (twice a week for 3 months), compensatory behaviours to avoid weight gain, and their frequency. Scored with the official PHQ office-coding algorithm for provisional bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.

Evidence · validated

Validated as part of the PHQ in 3000 US primary-care patients (Spitzer et al., 1999). In a US community (health-plan) sample, the PHQ eating disorder module had sensitivity 100% and specificity 92% for bulimia nervosa / binge eating disorder or recurrent binge eating, but a low positive predictive value (10–19%); the authors recommend follow-up questions to confirm objective binge episodes (Striegel-Moore et al., Int J Eat Disord 2010;43:337–343).
