About this screener — evidence, source
Eight of the nine PHQ-9 items, omitting item 9 (thoughts of death or self-harm). Scored 0 to 24 with the same cut-points as the PHQ-9. Intended mainly for research and population surveys where a positive self-harm answer could not be followed up — in clinical care, use the PHQ-9 so suicidal thoughts are asked about.
Evidence · validated
The PHQ instruction manual states the PHQ-8 is scored like the PHQ-9 and its cut-points are identical. Validated as a measure of current depression in a US population survey (Kroenke et al., 2009), using ≥ 10 to define current depression.
