About this screener — evidence, source, what inspired it

Written from scratch around the DSM-5-TR features of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), with an impact question and a medical red-flag question. OpenScreener could not find a validated eating-disorder screen whose terms allow free online reproduction, so this original fills the gap until one is available. It is not validated.

Evidence · unvalidated

This is an OpenScreener original instrument. Its thresholds are provisional, set by expert judgement rather than population norms, and have not yet been validated. Treat results as a structured record of concerns, not a score with known sensitivity or specificity.

Inspired by

  • SCOFF questionnaire · Morgan, Reid & Lacey (St George’s, University of London)
Idea of a very short yes/no-style first-line eating-disorder screen for primary care.
  • Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q 6.0) · CREDO, University of Oxford
Coverage of restraint, weight/shape concern, binge eating and compensatory behaviours over a defined recall period (free for non-commercial research only).
  • Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) · D. M. Garner / Eating Attitudes LLC
Pairing attitude questions with behaviour-frequency questions and a referral recommendation.
  • Nine Item ARFID Screen (NIAS) · Zickgraf & Ellis
Including avoidant/restrictive eating not driven by weight or shape concerns.
