About this screener — evidence, source, what inspired it

Problem anger and irritability are common after trauma (especially PTSD), and in depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, substance use, and after brain injury, but are rarely asked about directly. This screen records how often anger is felt and how strongly, how it is expressed — verbally, against objects, physically, or held in — what it has led to, and whether there are thoughts of seriously harming someone. There is no single anger diagnosis; the result points to the need to assess what is driving the anger and the risk to others. Established anger measures (DAR-5, STAXI-2) are restricted or paid, so this original fills the gap. It is not validated.

Evidence · unvalidated

This is an OpenScreener original instrument. Its thresholds are provisional, set by expert judgement rather than population norms, and have not yet been validated. Treat results as a structured record of concerns, not a score with known sensitivity or specificity.

Inspired by

  • Dimensions of Anger Reactions-5 (DAR-5) · Forbes et al.
A very brief screen combining how often, how intensely, and how long anger is felt with its effect on relationships, used widely in trauma services.
  • State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-2 (STAXI-2) · C. D. Spielberger; PAR
Separating the experience of anger from how it is expressed — outwardly or held in.
