ONS Personal Well-being Questions (ONS4)

16+ yearsSelf~1 min4 questions

Next I would like to ask you four questions about your feelings on aspects of your life. There are no right or wrong answers. For each of these questions I'd like you to give an answer on a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is “not at all” and 10 is “completely”.

About this screener — evidence, source

Four single questions used across UK government surveys to measure personal well-being: life satisfaction, a sense that what you do is worthwhile, happiness yesterday and anxiety yesterday, each answered 0–10. The four are reported separately, not summed, using the Office for National Statistics thresholds (for anxiety, higher scores mean lower well-being).

Evidence · validated

The four questions were cognitively tested and added to the UK Annual Population Survey in April 2011; they are the UK's harmonised national measures of personal well-being (ONS user guidance). The ONS thresholds are reporting categories for population statistics, not clinical cut-offs.
