About this screener — evidence, source

Section I records how often the person has intentionally self-harmed without suicidal intent, by method, plus context (pain, being alone, urge-to-act time, wish to stop). Section II rates 39 statements about why the person self-harms, giving 13 function scores (0–6) that fall into intrapersonal and interpersonal factors. Used to understand and target non-suicidal self-injury in treatment; it is not a risk assessment.

Evidence · validated

In 235 young adults from a college population who had self-injured, the 13 functions formed two factors — interpersonal (α = .87) and intrapersonal (α = .80) — with expected correlations with borderline personality features, suicidality, depression and anxiety (Klonsky & Glenn, 2009). One-year test–retest reliability was reported by Glenn & Klonsky (Assessment 2011;18:375–378). No cut-offs: function scores are interpreted relative to each other.
