About this screener — evidence, source

Ten items from the adult Empathy Quotient, each scoring 0–2, giving a total of 0–20 where higher means more self-reported empathy. Used in a study of over 670,000 people; it describes where someone sits relative to population norms and has no clinical cut-off.

Evidence · validated

In 671,606 adults aged 16–89 (Greenberg et al., 2018), mean EQ-10 scores were 8.87 (SD 4.75) in men and 10.79 (4.84) in women without autism, versus 6.92 (4.71) and 8.26 (5.03) in men and women reporting an autism diagnosis (case–control Cohen’s d 0.41–0.51). Groups overlap substantially and there is no validated cut-off, so the total is reported without bands.
