About this screener — evidence, source
A progress-monitoring tool for measurement-based care in substance use disorder treatment (not a case-finding screen). Items cover the past 7 days: physical health, sleep, mood, alcohol and drug use by substance, craving, confidence, self-help, risky situations, spirituality, work, income, conflict, support and satisfaction with recovery. Three composite scores — Use, Risk and Protective — are tracked over time.
Evidence · validated
Developed and evaluated in 175 patients entering VA outpatient substance-use treatment: three factors with alphas at or near 0.70, sensitivity to change, excellent test–retest reliability, and predictive validity for the recovery-protection and substance-use/risk factors (Cacciola et al., 2013). The IOP (7-day) version is adapted from the original 30-day BAM. VA states there are no norms or cut-scores for the composite scores.
