About this screener — evidence, source

The first three questions of the WHO AUDIT (frequency, typical quantity, and heavy-episodic drinking), scored 0–12. Validated as a stand-alone screen for alcohol misuse (hazardous drinking or alcohol use disorder) with sex-specific thresholds. A positive screen is usually followed by the full AUDIT or a clinical assessment.

Evidence · validated

In 1,319 US family-practice patients (Bradley et al., 2007), AUROCs were 0.94 in men and 0.90 in women, matching the full AUDIT. Optimal thresholds for alcohol misuse were ≥ 4 in men (sensitivity 0.86, specificity 0.89) and ≥ 3 in women (sensitivity 0.73, specificity 0.91), the same as in earlier VA studies (Bush et al., 1998).
