About this screener — evidence, source, alternatives

A short form of the 50-item Autism Spectrum Quotient, intended for adults without a moderate or severe learning disability. It is recommended in NICE clinical guideline CG142 to help decide whether to refer for a specialist autism assessment.

Evidence · validated

At a cut-off of 6, Allison et al. (2012) reported sensitivity 0.88 and specificity 0.91 in a sample of diagnosed adults versus controls. In clinical referral populations specificity is lower, and it can miss autistic people who mask — a low score should not block referral when concerns are strong.
