About this screener — evidence, source, alternatives

A quick referral guide for parents to complete about a teenager aged 12–15 years with suspected autism who does not have a learning disability. The ten items were selected from the 50-item adolescent AQ as the most discriminating.

Evidence · validated

At a cut-point of 6, sensitivity 0.93, specificity 0.95 and PPV 0.86 in 162 autistic adolescents versus 475 controls (Allison et al., 2012). The form states it is the adolescent version of the test recommended in NICE CG142. This was a case–control sample; accuracy in referred teenagers is likely to be lower.
